Hi All,
I am a postdoctoral researcher on J-1 visa. J-1 expired on Dec 31-2006, but I got extension in my project upto April 07, I got a new DS-2019 form with new dates of extended project. However my J-1 Visa on passport is not stamped as that can only be done at India. Now I need to go to India urgently in Feb-07. Now my question is, can I go to India an comeback to USA without extra process? My J-1 has expired already but I do have DS-2019 form, will it be sufficient to get me an entry into USA back? Or I do need to contact US consulate in India and get my Visa stamped once again? And if the later is the case, how much time will it take?
Thanks in advance for the help

Unfortunately you will not be able to renter the US if your visa stamp is not valid, even if your DS-2019 is valid. You must apply for a new visa in India. As for how long it will take, it is different for every country and every individual. You can contact your consulate and ask if you can submit your application (via your relatives) in advance and then schedule the interview for a date when you will be there (and scheduling interviews is different for each consulate). That's what I did in 2005 (not India though). A good idea of how long it will take is how long it took you for your first J-1. Good luck.

Hi jk0274,

May I know where you applied for your fresh J1, if not in India? How did the process go. Is it not required to apply in your contry of permenant residence. I am in Canada now and dont want to go to India just for J1 stamping. Please shoot your comments. Thanks.

I got my fresh J-1 from Israel, however, I am an Indian citizen. Process was very smooth and it took 15-20 days.
