Need Help with my asylum case

My wife applied for asylum back in june 2008 and Its been over 9 years since she is in here (asylum usually req within 1 year of arrival). I was on the file but not the one who seeks asylum so I do go thru finger print and etc. Couple of days ago we went to the IJ since our case was referred to IJ (not approved).
1. Judge to us that she could apply for cancellation of removal since we both have 2 years old US son.
2. However since I was only piggy back on her, he told me to apply my own asylum case.
He said something about derivative asylum over 1 year arrival.

My questions:
1. Is there's a way I dont have to file asylum to be able to stay?
2. What happen with my clock? is it going to start as 0 again if i filed my own case?
3. My clock when I check on 18008987180 couple weeks ago said it 140 and now it said 183, can i still file my EAD?
4. Any other solutions?
Thank in advance..

If you can't afford to hire a lawyer you should AT LEAST pay the fee to consult one for an hour. It shounds like you went to court without one which can be suicidal if you aren't familiar with immigration laws.

thanks for the info.... but our asylum case has been postpone for over a year with no EAD n no jobs we almost run out of our savings and barely eat this month (thank gods for food bank)
