Need help on entering US with AP

Hi all,

I'm a US citizen and I applied GC for my Dad when he visited US last year. He got his AP first and left US in July 2008 and stayed oversea for about 9 months now. His AP will expire in April 2009 and he plans to come back to US before the AP expiration day. Currently his GC case is still pending. I have the following questions:

(1) Since he stayed oversea for 9 months now, with a valid AP, will the immigration officer let him in? If they refuse to let him in, does he need to return right away? Or will they let him in and give him some grace period to leave US? On his arrival day I'll be waiting outside in SFO. How could I help in this case? I feel so nervous and helpless now.

(2) When going through immigration, should he go through the line for GC and US citizens or the line for all non-residents (visa holders)?

(3) During his 9 months stay in home country, my Mom was hospitalized for 1 month and my Dad was hospitalized for 1 week. Will this be useful evidence to explain why he stayed oversea for so long? We have the doctor's diagnostic report and billing statement from hospital. What else do we need to prepare?

If you have similar experience, could you please share with me? I would really appreciate any help you could provide!!!

1. They will let him in, don't worry about it
2. He should use the visitors line.
3. He doesn't have to make an excuse for staying away so long. He doesn't have a green card yet, he is not tied to the US like green card holders are.

Thanks a lot Jackolantern for your response. I really appreciate it! I felt much better after reading your reply.
