Need help for step-son's green card

I petitioned for my step son and he received his permanent residency. He left in June 2007 to vacation in the Dominican Republic. My soon to be ex husband and I separated. Long story short my step son has been in the Dominican Republic for the last 3 years. He is 17 yrs old and just finished highschool. He wants to come back here and has asked me to go get him. I sent him back in 2007 without his greencard (long story). What will happen if I try to bring him back with me. There were several reasons he did not come back sooner, one of them was his passport expired and his wonderful father (soon to be ex) decided to wait until last year to get the passport renewed. When I sent him back in 2007 his passport was just about to expire. I would like to try and bring him back with me but would like to get some idea of what his chances of being let in are. Yes my husband has permanent residency also but he spends all his time in Mexico. He only comes back to the USA for a few weeks every year. And no immigration has never stopped him. He has been doing this for the past 6 years. I am not looking to apply for a returning resident visa and he did not have the 2 year permission when he left. What may happen once we land in Miami????? I appreciate all the help anyone can provide. The advice will be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Assuming you are a US citizen, it looks like the most effective way would be to file for a fresh new green card for him, if you don't want to apply for a returning resident visa.

So if I try to take him with me can i assume I will have a problem at POE. That is more or less what I am trying to find out. What will happen once we get to Miami's airport. Will they deny him entry? Yes, I am a US citizen.

He is very likely to be denied entry at the POE if you go ahead and take him with you just like that, because of his 3-year absence.

You'll need to apply for a Returning Resident visa, or redo the green card process for him. The RR visa is faster and cheaper.
