Hi
I need advice from gurus
Iam laidoff after one week after approval

as you all know how tight is the job market

i applied for couple but respone is very bleak
and the hourly rates have fallen dramatically

even i am prepared to work for lesser pay even then no response

my question is
1. can i apply for unemployment claim
2. is there a problem if we claim

If you do so before G.C. then it can be construed (by an incompetent case officer) as an indication of a future possible "charge-of-state". Citizenship procedure does not care if you have been a "charge-of-state".

Go to Murthy.com : Just search the site with keywords like "Unemloyement benefits after Green Card" and there will be a bunch of stuff. This is a frequent topic in Murthychat. Here is one example :

Chat User : I am in the process of changing status. Can I apply for unemployment benefits? Will I get in trouble later when I apply H-1 or PR if I try to apply for unemployment compensation?

Attorney Murthy : Yes, a non-immigrant may have a problem in taking unemployment since that could prevent the INS from allowing him/her to be considered not a financial liability on the U.S. After getting the GC, it is not a problem if applying for citizenship.

One of my friend is in a similar situation, he got the approval notice and lay off in 2 days gap. He got his passport stamped and he is claiming Unemployment Insurance.
