My F1 visa expired in June 2005. I have to go home in Romania so I will have to renew my F1, but I only have 8 more months left of my PhD program till graduation.

- Would the U.S. consulate renew my F1 for the remaining 8 months?

- Should I rather go to Canada? Is it easier to renew F1 in Canada?

Your chances of getting F1 extension are good.

I don't see any specific advantage in getting F1 extension in Canada. While you still have to establish home ties, if F1 is denied in Canada, you have to go back to Romania. If I were you, I would extend it when I visit my home country.

Regardless of where you plan to extend your F1 visa, make sure that your school has entered your name and relevant data into the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), so that the Consular Officer can verify your documentation. I don't see any reason for the Consular Officer to deny your F1 visa extension.

Good experience with renewing F1 visa in Canada

I would like to thank those who replied my thread and messages. I am a Romanian student in US on F1. My visa expired and I was able to renew it in Canada. I went to the US Consulate in Quebec with all the necessary documents and they did not ask any questions, it was nice and easy.

The only hassle is getting the appointment done online. It is better to plan 2 months in advance ...

I do not know whether they renew F1 visas for students from any country, but if you send a fax to the US Consulate in Quebec, they answer pretty fast. I asked them a question and they called me home and left an answer on my answering machine.

Hi Geovisa,

I am in kind of a similar situation..I need to renew my F1 visa in Canada/Mexico.

Could you please elaborate (what questions did the VisA Officer ask, what documents did you take alog with you), etc. Thanks in advance

Do not worry

Hi Tamu,

As I mentioned earlier, the person at the US Consulate in Quebeq did not ask much. I was amazed myself. She only asked for my documents. I presented the documents they mention on the US consulate website (Passport, I-20, letter from school, etc.). Put them in the order in which they are listed on the website. That helps in speeding the interview.
One item that was not mentioned on the website, but they asked me for was the student ID (the one you got from your university). I don't know if this item is absolutely necessary, but they asked me for it. Then they took my fingerprints and gave me a receipt to return in the afternoon to pick up my passport.

Hope these details help. Good luck!

Geovisa,

Thanks a lot for the response.

I will update this thread when I get back from my visa interview process.

advice

Geovisa,

I have a question... How did you go to Canada if your visa was expired? I mean, if you go there and they reject your F1 visa, how can you enter the country?
My visa expired in December and I'm taking another class now but i would like to go to my country for a visit. I'm afraid that they reject my visa and not being able to come back to finish my studies.
What should i do?

trip to Canada

Yes, my visa was expired, so I took a risk. If they did not extend my F1 visa, I would have had to go directly to my home country and apply for F1 extension there. But I received advice on this website (as you can see above) and it all worked well. They did not have any reason not to give me the visa. But, I agree, it's a risk. I took it because I needed to travel outside US afterwards.
