Hi, I am planning to land in Canada within the next two weeks with my wife and son. My national passport (which was stamped by the Canadian consulate with the one time immigrant visa) is expiring in March. I am planning to renew the passport after I get back from Canada to the US. We are planning to drive to the Canadian post in a rental car, complete the landing process, apply for the PR and then return to US without actually going beyond the Canadian post into Canada.
My questions are:
1. Would it be OK if we came back to the US immidiately after landing in Canada (and obviously not applying for the SIN card at this time). Do the Canadian officials care whether we proceed into Canada at this time, or not?
2. Would it be a problem that my current passport will expire before I get the Canadian PR.
3. Do I still need to declare goods that we will be taking with us to Canada when we make the move permanently.
4. Do we need to declare funds even though we are not going "into Canada" at this time. If yes, then how much should we show?
5. Should we rent a car with the US number plates or Canadian number plates?
Thanks for your time. I would really appreciate any advice from the knowledgeable members on this forum.
Joe.
