Hi,

I was a dependent on my mother when she applied for immigration in Sep 2002 from CHC Delhi, have heard nothing since from CHC.

1. I recently graduated with a U.S. bachelor’s degree and am planning to do my masters. CAN I apply for immigration in the independent category myself even though I am a dependent on my mother’s application? I know it takes 4 yrs in India but takes only 2 in USA. So should I apply myself from the U.S. or should I wait for my mother’s application to be processed?

2. Will doing Masters from Canada help in immigration? I know you get more points BUT I don’t know if I will get a Canadian Student visa cause I have a pending immigration application (a dependent on my mother)?

3. Please give me names of any good lawyers in NYC who can help with the immigration process?

Please give me your advise on any of the above question. I will really appreciate it.

Thanks a lot!!

Sorry about the long post - :) Mehak

Hi mehak1,

I guess you can apply as an independent applicant based on your education and work experience, even though you are dependent on your mother's application. They will be assessing your mother application based on her education and work experience and dependents has nothing to do with it.

I think you need atleast one year of experience before you apply, check on the cic.gc.ca website. For canadian immigration lawyers, made a seach on the internet, go to their website before making a decision. I personally think for canadian immigration, lawyers are not required unless the case is complicated.

Good luck..

Jalma... Thanks for the reply!!

I could not find any consultants/lawyers in the New York City area. Do you have names of any good consultants that I can contact in/around NYC ?

Thanks - Mehak

Hi again,

I don't know any lawyer in NY city since i applied by my own. But most of the lawyer give you free telephone consultation if you have any specific questions.

http://canadavisa.com/ is one of the site you can explore. Never trust kaminternational.com. People had loads of complaints about them.

Hope this help
