My aunt petitioned for my mother (aunt's sister) for immigrating to US in 1986. My moms turn came in 1998 but we could not complete the paper work then. We wrote to Indian embassy for some extension, but never heard back. Is it possible that the petition is still active? If not, is there a way to reactivate the same petition (other than filing a new petition)? Some one told me that it might be possible to file a new application and keep the old number, is that possible? Any advice will be rally appreciated. I searched this forum but did not find an answer. If there is a place where this has been answered earlier, please guide me there.

Thanks.

When you said that "turn came in 1998 but we could not complete the paper work then" means that your mother had an approved petition back then, did she was contact by the Consulate? If it so, call the Consulate and check if her petition is still valid (since has been so long ago) and if she still can apply for an immigrant visa now.

You can check this or call the Customer Service at www.uscis.gov

Good luck,

Cherr you are right, their petition was approved, but since we could not complete the paperwork in time, we asked for an extension but never heard back. We were told that if one does not complete the paperwork in time, then the case is considered as closed. But only recently I came to know that sometimes cases can stay open for a long time or can even be reactivated. We just received a letter (I dont even remember from whom) saying that our petition was approved, but nothing other than that. We just have the file number (starting with A) and no receipt number. When I called the USCIS customer service center, their automatic system wants receipt number to track the case, even online tracking system wants receipt number. Where can we get this receipt number? Will it be on letter informing petion approval that my aunt received after about a year and half of petiotion filing? I did not get to talk with USCIS customer service. After going through a number of prompts, the system told me that it is transferring me to an agent and then that the wait time is over 30 minutes and then disconnected!! How to reach a live agent?

Thanks in advance to to everyone for the help.

Well, that part of waiting times over 30 minutes on the phone is not new and start getting use to dear, because is like that.
Call again and if you don't find your receipt number, you have an Alien number that is the A#. At the beginning of that letter should be a receipt number, another number over there. Anyway if you don't find it, call again Customer Service and get in the part of "if you filed an application..." then for case status, "if you don't have/know your receipt number" after that you will get until press 4 and then you will get a Customer Service agent and after that probably an officer. Over there you can ask all your questions. Are you able to contact the Consulate and ask there too?

Good luck,
