Hello,
I'm a lawful permanent resident currently in the process of applying for U.S. citizenship, and I have federal student loans. I'm concerned about how my repayment status might affect my naturalization application. I understand that being in default on a student loan does not automatically disqualify someone from citizenship, but I worry that consistent non-payment could raise questions about financial responsibility and impact the assessment of "good moral character."
I’ve also heard about programs like Public Service Loan Forgiveness, which can forgive loans after making 120 qualifying payments while working full-time in public service, though recent changes might affect eligibility.
In general, significant financial issues, including debt or bankruptcy, might not automatically prevent naturalization, but they could be seen as a sign of irresponsibility if efforts to resolve debts aren’t demonstrated.
Has anyone navigated student loan repayment while applying for citizenship? Any advice or personal experiences would be really helpful.
