Naturalization processing time increased

This is sad. It used to take six to eight months in Dallas and now it looks like it takes eight months to almost two years. Last year it took only five months to get N400 interview in Dallas. The number of pending applications does not seem to have gone up from the statistics page so I cannot understand why this much delay for N400 applications.

Anybody in Dallas received interview letters who have applied in Sep, oct, Nov or Dec 02?

The reason for the delay of N-400 processing is the Bush administration's dislike of immigrants. They have changed the law. Beginning of the end of last year, IBIS security checks are now required for the approval of N-400 applications. The avarage delay of N-400 application is two months because of this. It is ok to make more security checks. But this could be done during the time when the N-400 file is collecting dust (between the FP and interview).

The NY Times didreport that BCIS personal has been transfered from the N-400 department to a different office to process NSERV applications (persons who have to register with BCIS - mostly middle eastern nationalists).

9 months to wholeprocess

All,

I had my intereview in Dallas today. My date line is as follows:

1. PD: Jan 03 2003
2. FD: Feb 15 2003
3. ID: Sep 19 2003
4. OD: Sep 24 2003

The folks at the Dallas SC were polite and my interview went smoothly. The interviewer asked me if I had travelled outside US and I said yes and he asked me to tell the dates of travel. After the interview, the interviewer congratulted me for passing and asked me to wait. He mentioned that after reverification (where another office validates the Interviewers work) I would get my oath letter (445). After waiting for almost 45 minutes an officer came out and handed some of us the oath letter inviting us to the oath ceremony on the Sep 24 2003.

All in all my experience at the Dallas SC has been a very good one. Pls note my case was straight forward. meaning that there were no changes in name, no relocation etc. I did not contact any congressman and let the government machinary do its work.

This forum has been extremely useful for me. Thanks to all.

Hi Columbiaman,
Congratulations for getting your USC so smoothly!
At the interview, you were asked about stay out of USA. Did you have any stay out of US after filing N 400 ? How would they react to that situation?

Radni,

I did travel outside US since filing my N-400. I told them where I travelled (It was also entered in my passport). That was that. It did not seem to effect their decision to grant me approval.

Radni, One thing you have to realize is that these laws were made when it took only a couple of months to get citizenship. Immigration officers understand its unrealistic to stay in US (being born in another country) for over a year without travelling outside the country. Also, its a global economy now and in this day and age its quite coomon to travel often, so it should not be a problem at all.
