naturalization & green card renewal

I have a green card which expires in Oct 13. I would like to start applying for naturalization. I realize I need to still apply for a filing fee for my expiring green card but where do I start doing this. I don't see an option on the I-90 form to do this?

When exactly in October does it expire? If you apply for naturalization with more than 6 months remaining on your GC, you will be entitled to free I-551 stamping in your passport if your naturalization case is still pending when your GC expires, and you wouldn't need to apply for renewal.

If you're applying for renewal, pick "My existing card will expire in six months or has already expired" on page 2 question 2.

My GC expires on the 9th of oct 13. I was hoping to avoid paying the costs and go straight to the naturalization process.

On another website of this nature(trackitt.com), there was a Lady that had this same issue and she made an info pass appointment and they stamped her passport for 1 more year and that gave her time to complete her N-400 process. I suggest you do the same :)

Then you're already inside the 6 month window without having applied yet, so you're not entitled to the free I-551 stamping.

What you could do is delay renewing until you see what happens with the naturalization process. If you become a citizen before it expires, no need to apply for renewal. Otherwise if the expiration date approaches and it looks like you're not close to completing naturalization, go ahead and apply for renewal, and with renewal you can get an I-551 stamp.

Did she file the N-400 when she had 6 months (or more) remaining on her GC?

For what I understood on her posts, she filed with more than 6 months left on her GC but with the delays here in ATL her case was taking longer than the time she had on her GC....

thanks for the help. I have decided to go ahead and renew my GC and then begin naturalization over the next few months.

Her decision to file N-400 with more than 6 months left on the GC entitled her to free I-551 stamping. The OP has less than 6 months left, so the free I-551 stamping is not available.
