Naturalization Certificate

My wife is a US citizen and she has US passport. Now, it is almost time for me to submit my N-400. We were searching for her Naturalization Certificate to obtain the citizenship date to be filled in my N-400.

We could not locate the certificate and started to think that it was taken when we applied for her passport. Is it a possibility?

In case the certificate is really lost, can anyone guide us on the approach to obtain a official copy.

Thanks Friends. I am posting after a long time and will update my timeline as soon as N-400 is sent.

If the wife has really lost the naturalization certificate you can apply for a replacement with form N-565, however that's going to cost a few months and a few hundred dollars.

Perhaps a FOIPA request just for this information could be faster and free. Don't request the whole A-file which will take more than a year, just ask for this specific information, perhaps date of naturalization, Alien number and certificate number, you might need some of this information to ask for the replacement certificate anyway.

If you know the Alien number of your wife, perhaps an Infopass could help, they could look in their computers for the naturalization date. Even without the Alien number they might be able to look it up based on name and date of birth.

Hope any of these options helps you out.

In order to apply for the first US passport she probably sent the naturalization certificate, but this is returned, they don't keep it. She might have misplaced it when she got it back, or perhaps (very, very rare, almost impossible) it got lost in the mail.

Thanks Huracan. Your options are all doable and I would have chosen the Infopass route to start with.

However, I found the date in question in one of the form that we submitted for the Green Card. Thus, there is no urgency at this point.

I am just optimistic that she left some documents in her hometown with her mom and we can get them next time when we go there.

Dept of State must also keep records. But how come one forget when one became a citizen? The natualization may be too easy so the date is not
that important to make a permane timpression
