namechecks and common names

This may well be a dumb question, but it will help me settle something!

I'm an Aussie married to a USC. My name is uncommon - it's a weird spelling and I've not heard of anyone else who shares it. I have a Canadian friend, also married to a USC and beginning the AOS process, who has a very common name - in the realm of "John Smith."

Well, "John Smith" is utterly convinced that because of his name he's going to get bogged down in namecheck and I won't. (We both have clear records, as far as I know!) He's already had issues with the no-fly list at airports, which I know happens to plenty of people with common names, so I can see the grounds for his concern.

But is the immigration namecheck system really that unsophisticated? For some reason I expect them to be smarter than airports. They don't just key in "John Smith," do they? He's worked himself into a really negative funk about it, and I want to tell him there's more to their search parameters than firstname.lastname...

Advice/experiences appreciated!
