Name Problem on Welcome Letter

I received the welcome letter Saturday, but I found my first name is wrong. The consulate added a white space between my first name and TSC mis-interpreted it. Now my first name will be incomplete.

I called TSC this morning and was told to just write a letter to TSC. But I also heard some time before that we need to go to a local INS office to fill out some forms in order to correct the name problem. Can anyone provide your experience on this issue? This problem is pretty common for Chinese CPers.

Thanks.

It is my understanding that welcome letters as well as initial GC are issued by TSC. Since your GC is still not printed and mail, without wasting time write a letter to TSC identifying the mistake and include a photocopy of your welcome letter and proof of name such as birth certificate.

Name Problem Happened

I received my card and the name problem did happen. Now I was wondering how to correct it. I called TSC and was told to write a letter to TSC. I did, but haven't got response yet.

Later, I met a friend who got the same name problem. He went to the local INS office. The local office helped fill out G731N form (Inquiry about Status of I551) and sent to NSC, instead of TSC. (He got GC thru I485 from NSC). Before long, NSC returned the form saying they are not processing this kind of request. Aparently local INS office made a mistake. Then he went to local INS again. This time, they helped fill out another form I-90 and he had to turn in the plastic card, all sent back to NSC again! I don't know whether it is correct this time.

I am really confused on how to correct this simple problem. Does anyone have experience to share?

The normal process is to send a letter in writing to TSC to rectify the error and include a proof of name such as passport copies/ birth certificate copies.

Since you have done this and has not helped it may not be a bad idea to get your attorney involved. Yes the other option is to fill out I-90 form but i think there is some fees associated with it which you should get waived by writing the same letter that this was due to an error on the part of TSC/ USCIS.

Call 800-375-5283 and try talking to another officer to see if he/ she can help!

It would be ideal if the first option works. So I think I should wait for a while and see how TSC responds to my request. I did include copies of passport and plastic card. I only hope they wouldn't require the plastic card with the wrong name be sent back to them since I didn't do so. Thanks, kd1403.

Yes ultimately they will need you to submit the plastic card to get a corrected one. But i think you did the right thing by sending the packet with proof of name and copy plastic card. One they respond requesting plastic card only then surrender your card else you will been in a loop!
