Name on passport

Hello.

I am concerned by name as it appears in the passport.

On the front page my name reads like: Rahul Kumar.

However I had to add Sharma.

So the passport officer in India made a note on the next page which said that the name be read as Rahul Kumar Sharma. They entered a date and made an official note.

In my N-400 Application reads as Rahul Kumar Sharma. Same as in my driving License.

Do you think this would create a problem?

Please let me know.

I don't think it is a problem as long as somewhere on the passport it says Rahul Kumar Sharma and that is the name you have on your GC/License etc. For any name change (including name change after marriage), they used to make only update on the passport as you have mentioned and it is considered valid everywhere..

Is that legal? Can they change a name on spot and write a note about new name? Aren't they suposed to issue a new passport with a new name if there was an issue with your name?

The IO will most likely not need your passport for proof of name. In fact at the interviews most people get asked for GC and DL only by the IO. The passport may be asked for confirmation of trip dates.

Just so you know the name change stamp in passports is common in India. A friend got her name changed after wedding and all she got was the stamp with new name.
