Name discrepancy on my passport.

I am about to file for a green card or I-485. My name is Isabel. That is the name on my birth certificate and marriage license. My passport has my name spelt incorrectly as Esabel. My visa and I-94 also have the name Esabel.

Should I get an affidavit of name discrepancy? Do I have to get a new passport in correct name? Any other suggestions?

My passport is also expired. Can i file with an expired passport? It is very difficult for me to get a new passport. I live in Arizona and have to travel to Washington DC to my embassy by bus, a 36 hour bus ride. I have a hip problem which makes it very uncomfortable. Cannot fly due to expired documents.

I know this is a very technical question but I am broke and prefer not to use a lawyer if possible. I have received a lot of good advice here. Thank you.

What you have to file with, is what appears on your birth certificate. You should just make a notation to the immigration officer at the time of adjudication that it was incorrectly spelled. Your expired passport won't be a problem as proof of government issues ID.

Just use Isabel in your filing.

Thank you. But what kind of notation or correction should I get for the name discrepancy? I prefer not to wait till interview date to correct this. I want to submit my paperwork as accurately and completely as possible. What do you think about affidavit?
