Name different from petition

Hi,
Could anyone let me know what happens/ what to do when a person has a name different from the one on the filed petition. Is there any way to contact INS to change the name on the petition or does the application get rejected in any way without any other recourse.
Thanks...

Last name changes due to marriage or divorce are accepted provided the proof is furnished. This can be changed during the interview. Some people change their first name when they change their religion, in this case it would be a hard to convince USCIS that you are the same person. If you are trying to use someone else's application then forget it :D

The last name change is for a male person(not me  ). The application was filed by his brother-in-law for sister and family. The name on the petition is as first name, last name but unfortunately for him his passport has his name as first name, dad's name. So if his full name is John Francis Doe on the petition for GC it is listed as John Doe but his passport shows him as John Francis.
Is there anyway to amend the petition by informing the INS or any other way around this by providing some form of documentation without the petition being having to be withdrawn.
Thanks..

I don't think it should be a problem. I myself have been using "Jes" as a first name for all my documents (US driver's license, Canadian passport, Social security card ...etc). The only two documents that list my first name as "Jesse" are my Baptism/Birth certificates. That is until my green card arrived. My green card has the same first name as my Baptism/Birth certificates, "Jesse".

So now I have numerous official documents with different first names. I have since renewed my driver's license and although my green card lists "Jesse" as my first name, "Jes" was used to renew my driver's license as it is the name they had on record.

Would it create any problems in the petition getting approved and if the petition is approved can he still use it with the last name being different?
Thanks
