It has to be done before EAD/AP can be approved. The time frame varies a lot - from days to months. It took them almost 10 months to clear mine.
 
I had filed my 140/485/EAD/AP concurrently on June 14, 2004. I got my EAD/AP approvals on Aug 1, 2004. Does that mean that FBI had done my name check even though my 140/485 are still pending.
 
One More Question

I had done my FP. But my I-140 is still pending. I verified with FBI about the FP check, and they told they responded to USCIS the same day. So, does this mean everything from FBI is cleared for my case? Please explain.
