Isn't this process rediculous? Name check taking more than one year? If you are a terrorist, in one year damage should have been done already.
I wonder how many terrorists diligently went through this - prepare for GRE, TOEFL (1-2 years), apply to 10 US schools (1-2 years), get accepted, obtain a visa at the pleasure of consulate officers after 1-4 attempts, say good bye to family, go to a US school (3-6 years), after thousands of sleepless nights, graduate, find a job or do post-doc, practical training (1 year), pay taxes, survive 3-4 rounds of layoffs, Green Card process (5 years) - advertising, Labor Certification, I-140 and then patiently wait for one year of name check for FBI to catch them. And how many of them have been caught in this name-check process? Ofcourse them won't tell you - for security purposes.
It seems that they don't like Chinese names, especially big ones like Li, Wang, Zhang, Liu, Chen, Zhou, Zhao, Huang, Wu, Lin. My acquaintances with smaller family names like Diao, Mo, Wen, Lan all get quicker clearance from name check.
For rupnet Aug category, there are about a dozen cases that has submitted RFE around late 2002, but still waiting for approval. Maybe they all have big family names.
Can't they simply interview the appicants or suspects? Then it easy - clear, arrest, or deport. Isn't that simple?
