Hello Everyone!

First of all, I want to say hello! This is my first post and besides saying HELLO, I want to thank you in advantage for all the info I can get from this website.

Second, it is a question about name change:

I have my interview coming up this next Tuesday the 18th. And I wish I can change my name since I have never ever used my first name in my entire life. I've always used my middle name and everybody knows me by it.

I would like to use use my middle name as my first name and add a middle name that I like.

I sent my application last September and I did not ask for a name change. I read it is possible to make changes during your interview day, but I do not want any delays or any problems if I do so. I would much rather wait and change it later if I can get any delays; but if it is going to be the same or one or two weeks delay I would rather ask for the change the day of my interview.

Could you please let me know about any disadvantages on asking for a name change during my interview?

Please advice ASAP since I do not have much time left.

Kind Regards and Thank you so very much!!!

Name change

Sea_Biscuit,

You may end up waiting for one year, may be less may be more to get your name change. One of my friends in Atlanta had to wait one whole year & during that wait, he also got a speeding tkt (few days before his oath). When he went for the oath he was asked if there were any traffic violations or any unpaid tkts sitting. He said that he recently got a tkt & will be paying it off soon. They refused to let him take the oath & told him that a new date would be mailed out to him. In the end, after waiting for few weeks since he did not hear anything, he decided to keep his old name & forget about name change.

Thank you very much!

Dear Atlanta_Brother,

I really appreciate your time on answering my question. I also thank you so very much. I really do.

I won't change my name at my interview next Tuesday.

Once again THANK YOU VERY MUCH you saved me potentially a year of waiting time in my life.

Best Regards,

Don't complicate yourself... a bird in hand is much better than 2 not in (something like this Bush used to say).

Seeing that you are going to wait..... I just want to share with you, that is not always true.

My BF changed his name during his interview, and he got his Oath letter a week after that.

Who knows....maybe it just depend on the DO.

Let me qualify the preceeding posts, because none of them have given a reason for the delay. It depends on your state. E.g., if you were in MN, there would be no delay, because every oath ceremony is conducted by a Judge. In states where an INS officer conducts a ceremony they will need to have name change candidates go through a special ceremony. In the event you don't belong to a state such as MN, you need to check how often your district office has an oath ceremony conducted by a Judicial officer.

my coworker requested name change during the intervue...
it delayed her oaths cerenmony a bit...(without the name-change,
she would has been a USC that very same after-noon in side
the USCIS destrict office)

as it turn out, she did has to wait 12 days to attends the
oaths cerenmony at the local Fedearl courthaus.

12 days is a realy, realy long time... :( (I being sarcastic here :D )

Thank you all three for sharing your experiences. I am not sure how they do it here in Vermont, so I might just go and keep my birth name. I can always eventually change it in the future.

I do really appreciate your input on this.
Thank you very much!!!
