Hi-
My wife applied along with me for the citizenship.

Our time line details:
My Priority date : December 21, 2003
Finger prints : February 12, 2003
Interview date : May 20 ,2003 9:00 AM
My Oath : May 20, 2003 2:00 PM

My wife had a name change. She received the letter of Oath on July 23. She has taken the Oath on August 15 at 1:30 PM.

It took nearly 3 months for her to take Oath after passing the Interview.

Good Luck

Name Change

1) Did your wife had the interview on May 20 ,2003 along with your own interview?
2) You seem to be among very few lucky once to have oath on the same day as interview. How did it go? Did they ask you after you passes the interview to appear for oath in the afternoon?
3) What did they say in case of your wife who also cleared the interview withyou on May 20 th morning?
4) Scanning the Forum on this Name Change issue, it appears to me that if one opts for name change ( which is finally confirmed only at the interview, till then one has that option open) , then FBI wants to run a recheck on the changed name as their earlier check was not on the NEW name. This may be the cause of delay for oath.
I personally conclude : If one needs minimum delay for oath, DO NOT OPT FOR NAME CHANGE.

Hello

Hi,,,,

First time i heard that FBI runs a check on new name to be , which to be changed.

Its not that I am challenging ur information, its just that i didnt hear of it before. If this is the reason than its clear that **name change delays oath notification**.

because to me in the past i knew it that name change delays oath, but i was UNclear on the REASONS which may delay the oath process...

So i request u to post ur information about name change in N400 process in detail. i am interested in it, because I am one of those who has Unfortunately asked for name change , only reason***not knowing that it will delay this process , which I cant wait any longer to get it DONE with***.

Thanks again for ur post in advance ..

Regarding to your questions:
1) Yes me & my wife had interview on the same day, May20, 2003.
2) My name on my birth certificate did not match with my name on my application. I was asked weather I wolud like to have the name change from the one on the Birth certificate to the one on my application. I said no and took the name on my birth certificate. Tehn I was asked weather I would like to take Oath on the same day afternoon (May 20) or would like to take in a cermony after 4-6 weeeks. I opted to take on the same day.
3) In the case of my wife Her middle inital is different on the application and birth certificate. But she wanted to have the same middle inital as on the application. She was told that's the name change and need to sent to court for name change. It took only 8 days for the court to do the name change. But INS took 2 weeks to send the Oath letter. ( The oath date was 6 weeks from the date of the letter).

Hi shaky,
Sorry, I am no expert on this procedures of FBI clearence, but i am trying to understand it thorugh this forum just as much as you are.
Please refer to another thread " FBI clearence at the time of interview " under this forum. Some interesting observations there .
It was my personal logical thinking that if FBI is clearing an individual on the basis of name, date of birth, alien regn. no. , finger prints etc, they may not want to neglect a name change without a recheck.
My hypothesis can be , off course, wrong if someone comes up saying he had requested a name change at the interview ( but not requested in the N- 400 application form at the time of filing) and still he was asked to take oath on the same day. In that case FBI does not want a recheck on name change.
Let us see if we get more people to share their experience on this.

Maybe we are using the the wrong terminology here. All FBI does is clear you based on finger prints, which happens within the first 3 months of this long wait.
If a name change is requested, I believe the check they would do is aganist one of the databases (can't remember the name - but is addressed in another thread). The immigration officers normally have access to this database and should not take more than a few minutes to lookup.

Changing name by an individual does not change his/her fingerprints :) :)
