I based in So. California. I am planning to file my N-400 for my citizenship. I would like to cut short my loooong last name to a shorter one. Also I want to do the same new last name for my wife. Do I just indicate for me and my wife on the N-400 the proposed new name? Is there anything else I need to do? AFter that what do I need to do? Please advise

1. Indicate your intention on the N-400 form.
2. Verify same at the interview
3. You will receive a court document confirming the name change when you naturalize
4. Update your DL and social security card etc..

Name change

So, will the USCIS take care of dealing with the courts. In other words, other than indicating on the form, I dont need to do anything additional like filing a petition with the court or some other agency to do it. Please let me know. thanks, Rian

USCIS will deal with court. You do not have to do anything else.

A judge will be present at the oath ceremony, and he/she will legalize all the name changes.
