name change issue

Hi Gurus,
We've got a court order of name change for my minor child (who is a GC holder), but we didn't make the change either on his foreign passport or GC. Now, when it's time to apply for citizenship, he's still a minor dependent, which makes name change not an option on N-400. My question is - if we don't file N-600 (certificate of citizenship) for him, can he have the right (new) name on his first US passport? Or we have to make the change on his immigration document (e.g. GC or certificate of citizenship)? Your input is appreciated!

My opinion - You can get the new name on the passport when you apply for one...followed by the court order. However it is advisable to get the old name amended on the all the general documents...(e.g. SS card etc.). Your child should be using the new name on anything going forward after the court order has been issued...(and when in question why the name is different, the court order document will prove the name change).

what is the procedure for name change for us citizens ?

my wife and myself are in the process of applying for US citizenship and have applied for a name change in our N-400 already. Our son was born here and is already a US citizen and is a minor. What is the procedure for changing his last name ? can u send me some pointers ? I am presuming that we should wait for our interview to be approved first - which will mean our name change will also be automatically be approved at that time, and then apply for his name change - stating that parents have a new last name.
would that interview approval letter be enough for the passport office or should we still have to go to court ? the State dept says - marraiage cert, court order or other official documents.

I got my son's name changed through the county courthouse. I'm positive it is the same procedure that applies to citizens. It's actually pretty straightforward - takes some time and money though. Call your county courthouse and find out what needs to be done.
