Name Change in San Jose

Today, my wife and I had the interview in San Jose office.
And, she got her last name changed to my last name.

According to the officer who interviewed me, only the last name change through
marriage is accepted in San Jose office, if you have marriage certificate to prove
your marriage.

All the other name changes are not permitted, because there will be no judges
in the oath ceremonies.

Hope this helps.

I concur. I answered "yes" on Q1c on my N-400 (just to correct the name spelling on my GC), but the IO at San Jose crossed it out and said they don't have the jurisdiction to do name changes there.

If you're dealing with San Jose, your naturalization certificate will have the name you put down in Q1a, period. So just bring proof that Q1a is your legal name to the interview. Better yet -- send in the original proof or certified copy with the N-400 application and an explanation letter if Q1a is different from Q1b. AND bring proof to the interview.

Is this still the case in 2011. Is there anyone with more recent experiences of name changes in San Jose?
