name change in passport.

I would like to know if anyone has recently got their name changed in the passport for H4 stamping in India.i heard somewhere that they issue a new passport.then what about the previous visa stamp on the pp.can we just not get the spouse name added on the passport.

Also i would like to know if anyone had got it done from the embassy in washington.

Yes I have - but I have a H1B visa. Although I don't know if that matters.
Yes - they do issue a new passport for a name change but the visa on you maiden name (in the old passport) is valid as long as the visa's validity period.
I got it done at the NY Indian consulate.
I even travelled to India after this name change - there wasn't any issue.
 
Hi Guys,

I am also on H1 Visa and wish to have my name changed. I saw on the DC Indian embassy website the steps involved but when I tried to publish an ad in a local news paper here they said you have to go to the County Court. I guess the County Court people will be doing it for US Citizens only. I would greatly appreciate if you can outline the steps you took to have a successful name change.

If it is name change from maiden name to married name then you only need to take your spouse pp with marrige certifcate to indian conulate, they will change name in one day.

We did for my wife one and half year ago at Chicago consulate.

Jbm, thanks for the reply. Mine is not a case of name change because of marriage. I wish to change the spelling of my last name and I have to follow the procedure as given in the Indian embassy website. I just wanted to get some more info from anybody who has successfully done name change other than marriage case. Please post your experiences.
