Name change after US Citizenship

Hi,

Does anyone have any experience with changing the last name after receiving US Passport. Here is my situation:
1. My wife has a different last name then me. She received her US Citizenship last year in October. During the interview, the USCIS officer refused to change her name saying that you should do this later.
2. She applied for the US Passport during the oath ceremony and they did not accept the name change.
3. Now she has a US Passport with her maiden surname. She would like to change it to my family name.
4. She has not yet renounced her Indian Citizenship.

What are thesteps that we need to follow. Any insights?

Thanks!

Were you married in the USA or in India? If you have a US-issued marriage certificate, then she can use it to change her name on all documents (including the passport). If you have a foreign marriage certificate, I do not know whether it could be accepted by the US government. In the worst case, she can always do a name change through the court.

I would advice her to renounce the Indian citizenship with her current passport because it will match the name in the Indian passport.

During oath ceremony itself judge usually approves name change.

1. Else you could do it through a family court by paying around $100 fee.
2. When you go in for US passport renewal or new passport you can change to new name with court papers for proof.
After name change if the state you live in requires you need to advertise new name on paper.
