We are still waiting to get the Cert of Citizenship(COC) for our 11 year old son who is a Canadian citizen and has a US GC.

We are scheduled to travel to South America next weekend.

Can my son travel with COC pending and what happens if his COC is approved next week or while we are away?

If the COC is approved next week, can he depart US using a Canadian passport and enter US 4 weeks later on his US passport (to be applied after receiving COC) ?

Why don't you schedule an appointment at a passport centre and try to get the US passport for your son in 1-2 days? You don't have to wait for the certificate of citizenship to apply for a passport.

In all practical terms, your son can still travel with his Canadian passport and the green card - that is until the CBP figure out he already has US citizenship. Many people do not have any idea their children automatically acquire the US citizenship, so I do not think that there would be any repercussions from the CBP.

The next appt at the nearest regional passport center, ie., SF is for 10 days from today.

I got an email alert today stating that the COC is approved and I need to setup an infopass within 2 weeks to pickup the COC !

To avoid the secondary evidence requirement, I am thinking of picking up the COC middle of this week and
driving to the Regional passport center to plead my case.

Any suggestions?
