N400 Question - Part 1. (Any other names used)

Dear All,

I am in the process of applying for my N400 application and got stuck at the following question from Part 1.

Part 1. Question# C
"If you have ever used other names, provide them below."

My maiden name is "Madhuri Dhar" and even after marriage, I continue to use the same name. I haven't changed my name on any of the documents after marriage. However, on my marriage certificate, it shows my last name as my husband's last name somewhere on the second page where you have to sign. ie 'Madhuri Nanda' instead of 'Madhuri Dhar'. I haven't used 'Madhuri Nanda' ever on any of the other documents besides the marriage certificate.

So I am a bit confused now. Should I fill in 'Madhuri Nanda' here at all or just leave it blank? But if I leave it blank, then would there be any problems / questions later when my husband applies for his Green Card (thru marriage based petition)?

Has anyone been in this situation before or got any insight into this.?

Will greatly appreciate any response on this.

Some attorneys advise to include it in the "Other names used" section. Certainly it is not going to hurt, where as not-including may create some questioning down the road -- especially you are planning to use the marriage certificate for other immigration benifits such as GC for your spouse.

I am not sure that the infamous name check will have to be done on both names!!!. Anyone that has experience with Name check and "other names used" could contribute.

Thank you very much for your response GeeC. I most probably will be mentioning my married name in that section.

thanks again
Madhuri
