I am about to file my N400 next month in Houston and I have the following questions:

1. Whom do I send the check to ?. Is it USCIS or DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY ?

2. I am thinking of changing my last name to my Spouse's last name who is not a USC yet. There is an option in the N400 form. Has any one done that in Houston ?. Does it delay the cititizenship ?.

Answer to Q1: Make the check payable to "U.S. Department of Homeland Security".

From the document checklist (section M-479) at the back of A Guide to Naturalizatin (PDF can be downloaded from USCIS) - it states:

"You must send the $390.00 fee with your application. Pay the fee with a check or money
order drawn on a U.S. bank payable to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Do not use the initials DHS or USDHS. Do Not Send Cash.
Residents of Guam should make the fee payable to the "Treasurer, Guam," and residents of
the U.S.Virgin Islands should make the fee payable to the "Commissioner of Finance of the
Virgin Islands."

With regards to your second question, if you look at part 1 (D) of the N-400 form, you are given the option of changing your name. (There is no extra charge for this.) If you fill in this part, then your name will be changed by court order at the naturalization ceremony. I opted to change my name, but I don't believe it caused any delay for me. My total time from application to oath ceremony was 6 1/2 months. At the ceremony, you would receive your naturalization certificate, and name change document.

Does requesting the Name change in the N400 FORM delays the citizenship process ?.

Has anyone got it successfully done in Houston,TX.
