N400-Different names on Green Card, Social and Drivers License

N400 applicant

Registered Users (C)
Hi All,

I applied for N400 in Aug 2004. Got FP in Sep 2004 and scheduled for Interview for Feb 2005.

I have a question for name check:

I am listing my names in my N-400 , GC , Social and DL. ( Names are fictional ofcourse)
I had my gc since I was 19 and unmarried.
I got married 2 years back and changed my middle name to husband's first name and my last name to husband's last name. I got the change done on my social security card . When I went to TX DL, they told me I can change my last name but not the middle name. So on my new DL, I have my husband's last name, my first name and my older middle name.

To summarize, I have made a grid as below.

BEFORE MARRIAGE

(Last) (First) (Middle)
Passport: Shetty Swati Ram

GC: Shetty Swati Ram

Social before marriage: Shetty Swati Ram

DL before marriage: Shetty Swati Ram

AFTER MARRIAGE ( My husband's name is Sen Tejas Kamal)

Passport: Shetty Swati Ram

GC: Shetty Swati Ram

Social: Sen Swati Tejas

Drivers Lic.: Sen Swati "Ram" ( They cud not change middle name from Ram to Tejas..!!!!!) Their system does not permit middle name change on basis of marriage certificate......!!!)

N400 application: Sen Swati Tejas

Credit card/banks/job/everywhere: Sen Swati Tejas

My questions are:
1) will this things create a problem in my name check...i mean anybody faced anything for this kind of name confusion.
2) Does the INS request a name check from FBI "after" or "before" the interview.
3) Is there a way, we can explain to the officer during the interview ?

The N 400 application has "Sen Swati Tejas" and "Shetty Swati Ram" on them. But nowhere is the name "Sen Swati Ram" . There was no particular placeholder for it.

Does the name check happen on every combination of names used ? Does FBI automatically run a namecheck on all possible combination of last/middle/first names..?

Thanks all for ur help.

1. If your interview is scheduled it might mean your namecheck is done. What is your DO? Inquire for a namecheck status now

2. The SVC Ctr requests namecheck automatically FAR BEFORE the interview in almost all cases

3. Yes. Take concrete proof of the name you want

FBI AUTOMATICALLY checks all combinations of your name

My Name was also reversed on my GC. FBI identified my name with the name mentioned on my N400.

Worst case INS may ask you to undergo a namechange before oath

Hi Rahul,

Thanks a lot for ur immediate reply.
1 ) DO is Dallas/TX,
2 ) I have emailed fbi on about Jan 4 2005 at 'fbinncp@ic.fbi.gov' with a request for name check status. Have not heard anything.
3) You told " If interview is scheduled it might mean namecheck is done". Then why are so many people in this forum waiting for oath letter for long times after the interview and then why does the INS officer during interview says that they "recommend" and they are waiting for all clearances to be done. ( All this is again from my readings of various posts and a logical conclusion...as to if name check is done "after" or "before".)
4) In any case, if FBI has already done the name check before and INS recieved the records, will the INS officer again send for a name check when he/she sees a different name on DL during the interview.
5) How important it is to carry the DL to the interview . I mean a DL is not required by law( ..;) devil thinking here....hehhehe)

Thanks again and awaiting replies and comments...

1)ok
2)It takes a long time to get a response
3)Its just a possibility. I initially thought you had got your oath that why I said that. Well scheduling an interview actually means nothing wrt to name check
4)Unlikely -> all combinations of your names are processed by the FBI.
5)You need to carry your DL to the interview. It is the most commonly used
proof of identity/residence etc. Take it with you, show it if you have to

names on green card and SS card do not match

I was trying to get a New York State ID, but my name on my green card doesn't match exactly with all my other documents (including SS card). The positions of my first and middle names flipped.

If I don't want to change the name of my green card at the moment, is there any other method to prove/support this name "difference"? Such as obtaining some proof from court or elsewhere? How?

Thank you very much.

There are separate questions for (1) your current legal name, (2) name as displayed on the GC, and (3) other names used.

For (1), USCIS considers your birth certificate to be the document that proves your legal name, unless you changed your name through marriage or a name change court process.
For (2), the GC itself is proof.
For (3), they only care about other names so they can run background checks; you don't need proof of the other names.

If the name on your GC is not your official legal name but you want the GC name to become your legal name, you can request a name change through the naturalization process.
