N400 - Address Questions

Hi,

I need some help with N400. I have finished 4 years 9 months (physically stayed in US for 45 months) and never stayed more than 3 months away from US in a single trip. After working for US company for 8 years, I worked for its India subsidiary from Nov2003-Nov2004. During that time I was in India and US alternate months.

My questions are:

(1) Should I mention addresses with dates when I stayed in US apartment & India house. OR can I mention both addresses for period Nov2003-Nov2004.

(2) I might change my apartment in next few months. Can I give my friends home as Mailing Address in N400.

Appreciate your help. Thank you

I think one shouldnt put down the India address at all.
My reasoning is as follows: Say, I take a trip to China for 3 months. My residence would still be a US address. Even the thought of mentioning the China address in the list of residence in last 5 years wouldnt occur to me. (But your case is not a single vacation trip but a regular monthly see saw between India and US)

But then, this is my reasoning. On the other hand, you could mention both the addresses as residences for the same time period. This probably would trigger a question from the INS officer - hence, you should have letters from your company that you were working alternative months in India and US.
Well, again these are my thoughts.

Now, I highly recommend taking up a USPS PO box - its hecka cheap. I always use it, as mail never gets lost/stolen, and it reaches you pretty quick. Set the mailing address as a PO box, possibly near your new place of residence.

Here is what I did on my N-400:

I listed all my addresses for the past five years, including my address in Germany where I stayed while away on my Reentry Permit from early 2000 until early 2002. I came back to the U.S. a few times during 2000 and not at all during 2001.

I figured that if I list an absence of a little over one year (all of 2001 and a few days in early 2002) they figure that I have a physical - yet temporary - address overseas. I guess they would not have expected me to sleep outdoors or camp ;-).

Once my interview comes up, I am not too worried about the address thing. The reason for my one year absence and overseas address is well documented and reflects that it was only temporary to finish my degree. They should have it in my A-file (my Reentry application). Plus, I have a copy of the original Reentry Permit application which lists the reason for my absence, incl. a specific timeframe for my time abroad. I will carry all this with me to the interview, including my degree and some other college documents which support what I had stated on my Reentry Permit application.

Good luck!
