N-470 Option - Please Advice

I have a green card since 3 years. I got married about 7 months back and my wife is still in India. Our long distance relationship is simply not working out.

I am exploring the possibility of going back to India and working there for the next 2 years till I become eligible to apply for citizenship.

1.) I was wondering whether I am eligible for N-470 so that I can stay abroad but the period still counts towards citizenship.

2.) Do I need a company sponsorship for N-470 enabling me to go back & work in India. Or can I do it on my own. I have never met any one who has actually got a N-470 approved which makes me wonder whether there are any pitfalls associated with it.

3.) Also while I am staying abroad, can I still apply for my wife's green card. Or should I simply wait till I get my citizenship.

Thanks for the help.

Joef,
Thanks for your response. I had some related questions.

You had mentioned that I have to be in the US for 1 year to be eligible for N-470.

1.) Does it need to be a continous (no travels abroad) 1 year stay in the US?

2.) Also if a US company sends me to India for a software project, is this considered to be eligible for N-470?

3.) Also while I am abroad, is it required by law that the company needs to be pay me in US $.

THanks a lot for your help!

joef - please advice

joef,
I had a question relating to the clarification you gave regarding N-470
I got my green card (passport stamped) in Sept 2000.
I have travelled occasionally during this period outside the US.

Unfortunately, I did travel in March of this year.
But I did have a continous 1 year stay in US (no travels abroad) from Sept 2001 till Oct 2002.

Does this continous period of 1 year (although it is not current) allow me to apply for N-470?

Thanks for your help.

Thanks

Joef,
THANKS a lot for your feedback and the document link you mentioned.

By the way, for proving continous residence, can I just show documents such as apartment lease / Tax returns for the year / paystubs from the employer?

Also will the period of stay abroad on N-470 count towards citizenship? I read in one of the articles that even with N-470, one needs to have stayed continously in the US for 36 months for citizenship (without leaving the US even for 1 day during these 36 months). Is this true?
I did take short vacations abroad since Sept 2000 when I got my green card. So I was wondering whether this disqualifies me from applying for citizenship 2 years from now even if I get N-470 approval?
