Hi Everyone,

I would like to give my Timeline for the N-400 Timeline in Seattle, WA.

Green Card Obtained - 3/09/2003
Moved to the USA - Jun 2004
Filed for N-400 - 2/15/07
Receipt Notice - 2/28/2007
FP - 3/27/2007
Interview Notice - 6/28/2007
Interview - 8/27/07
Oath - 09/06/07 - Inshallah

I think the Process in Seattle, WA is very smooth. I hired a Lawyer who charged me 800 for the whole process. It cost me 1250 in all. My lawyer advised me to amend my Wife's return for 2003 and 2004 and guess what. I got a refund of 4300 for the two years. So guys, hire a good lawyer. It always pays.

The Interview was good and lasted 12-15 minutes. Oath should have been next Monday but because of Labor Day it is now scheduled for next Thursday.

Thanks

PB

Your "lawyer" asking you to file amended return? Why?
Thought Tax advisors and Chartered Financial Accountants look at that!

how did you apply withouth having to wait 5 years with green card

You do not have to wait 5 years if you got your Green card through your Spouse (IR-1). 2 year and 9 months into the Green Card, you become eligible if you have had 18 months of continuous residency (no trip more than 6 months during the time, even trips linger than 3 months can delay your process).

So people, if you have been a green card holder through your spouse for 3 years, go for N-400. The sooner you start the process the sooner you will get your citizenship

When I was filing my N-400, I relaized that our accountant had listed me as the dependent of my wife but the filing was not "joint". When I was added to the dependents list along with my children, our tax liability went down and I was entitled for a refund. I even got interest for the time I did not claim this refund. Now if this is not a grat country, which one is???

People,

My Lawyer also told me one very important thing. CIS has now stopped calling people for Interviews before getting a clearance on the name checks. So all of you who have received interview notices in the Jun-Jul 2007 onwards time period and henceforth, should assume that the name checks have been cleared. So if you pass your interview, you should be naturalized within a week, depending on the center where you are giving your interview.

Congratulations on the smooth journey. My conclusion from your experience is to have a smart tax auditor rather than a lawyer:) It just happened that filing jointly to show the 3 year basis rule ended up with a tax refund. While in most cases this is true, it may not necessarily be the case for everyone. One could end up with a tax penalty as well, if one of the single filers had large deductions which could trip the couple in to the AMT black hole very easily.
