N-400: temporary international assignment

Last year, I accepted a temporary international assignment for 4 months. During this time I made 2 short trips (one was 2 days and the other was 7 days) back to the US. All my trips and dates are documented in the trips section of the N-400.

My company got me an employment visa to work in Singapore and I paid Singapore taxes in addition to federal and state taxes last year. I was still on the US payroll during my assignment.

While I was in Singapore, I was staying at an 'extended stay' type of hotel. Do I report this hotel as one of my residences for last year?

I am not worried about breaking continuous residence because I maintained a US residence that my family continued to live in, while I was abroad.

Thanks for reading.

A 4 month stay in a hotel for a business project doesn't count as a "residence". Don't list it on the N-400.

Of course, you still have to list the trips in the section which asks about your foreign travel.

Thanks, Jack.

I guess if I would have taken up a domestic temporary assignment for 4 months, I wouldn't have reported where I was staying as a 'residence'. My only concern was the international aspect of it.

I'll make sure I take enough documentation to my interview to prove it was a temporary assignment and I did not give up my residence in the US.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it.

It was only 4 months, broken up into two trips. If that's the only significant travel you have, they're not going to ask you to prove that it was temporary. Stop worrying about it, unless you meant 14 months not 4 months.

Hi camacho58,
I had made two 4 month trips and continued to pay mortgage/ received us pay cheques and of course filed Federal and State Taxes. I only listed them as stays outside India. I received my USC in July '13. All the best.

No typo, it was a 4 month assignment. Rest of my travel has been vacations/ visiting friends, family only.

Thanks for the feedback vijay421201.

Camacho58,

You should be fine as other members have mentioned. 4 months temporary assignments are not an issue. After searching this forum vigorously for extended stays and continuous residency, I have come up to the conclusion that unless you broke the fundamental rules (6months outside and etc) you should be OK. It is because I travel quite a bit and I was little worried in the start as well. I have seen some cases where the applicants were very close to 6months rule and had 900 days outside US but they were either not even asked about it or were approved after showing adobe to the US.

Thanks, ripcurl. I'm not worried about my assignment's effect on my application; I just wanted to see what other people's opinion was on whether to show the foreign address as a residence. I was leaning towards not adding it anyway, but was curious to see how others interpreted the N400 instructions.

Thank you for your reply.
