I am ready to apply for N-400 form. My Permanant Residence is w.e.f 11/01/01 so as per rule I can apply 8/01/06 ( 90 days ahead).

My GC was consular processing from India and I entered again US on 11/01/01.

QUESTION

In Section 7 of N-400 there are 3 questions

A How many total days did you spend outside of the United States during the past five years?

B . How many trips of 24 hours or more have you taken outside of the United States during the past five years?

C . List below all the trips of 24 hours or more that you have taken outside of the United States since becoming a LawfulPermanent Resident. Begin with your most recent trip. If you need more space, use a separate sheet(s) of paper.

For A & B : Should I include the trip of Sept-Oct'01 for consular processing also

In C: It asks for trips since 11/01/01 - day of Permanant Resident.

So I have for Question B : 4 and for Question C : 3.

How to handle this ?. Pl advice

Thanks in advance

You include trips from 11/01/01. implies, you dont include the Sep-Oct trip.
So question B = 3, so also for C.
Anyway, it doesnt matter as this information is required to decide if you are eligible and you have maintained continuous residency. Trips which are > 6 months are the ones which the IOs concentrate on.

Count it in!

As my attorney said, 'last 5 years' is from the day you fill N-400.

Don't worry about it, it won't cause any trouble to you.
But if you don't count it in, and interview with a picky guy....
You might have to spend more time to explain it!

Since it won't hurt you at all, why don't you just write it on!

My 2 cents

those questions are very confusing.

a question asks you the "last 5 yrs". another question asks you "since you had your PR"...

for people who got the greencard thru marriage of a USC with DCF, they actually might not stay in US for more than 3 yrs, and for the "last 5 yrs" question, I wonder how it exactly should be answered.

My wife will need to answer the same tricky question when she applies her citizenship. I just hope by the time she applies, the question will be revised with better description.
