Greetings from Texas everyone. Does anyone know if the n-400 is asking for my wife's maiden name or her married name (which is my last name)? This is in Part 8: Information About Your Marital History.

Question B1 - Spouse's Family Name (Last Name):

The instructions are not very helpful. They simply state: Provide information about your spouse.

Thanks for any insight.

It is just her current last name

Spouse's current family/last/surname.

If your wife had changed her last name after marriage, then it should be used.

Also, can anyone point me to a thread about mailing the N-400. On USCIS pages, I can't find any information that says I can mail it Registered/Return Receipt requested or Express, or anything else like that. Is it ok to send it in this way so that I am sure that it has been received? I could not find this topic in the forum. Perhaps I am looking for it wrong. I just don't want to send it in a matter that will result in it not getting through, but sending it regular first class mail just does not seem like enough assurance.

Send it to the Texas or Phoenix lockbox unit, depending on your state/DO.
The instructions are clear in the N-400 instructions guide.
I have sent mine with USPS using certified mail so that I can track the status. You don't need return receipt. If you send it by Express mail, it may reach there a day earlier than regular post.

Thank you. I don't know how I missed that. The instructions on the longer "Guide" are slightly different and only mention the lockbox address vs. non-USPS mail. But this is pretty clear. So using certified mail, you can track status and get confirmation of delivery online youre saying?

Yes, BTW which one applies to you? Lewisville or Pheonix?
You can send your application form using USPS priority mail, certified.

You can send both you and your wife's application forms in one envelope (different forms, checks, photos, copies etc - two sets clipped separately)

The Lewisville address applies to me. The one thing I'm nervous about is that my permanent resident card is expired. I do have the receipt of when I applied for the renewal, and I even have a letter stating the case was approved, but the darn card never came in the mail. I went to talk to an officer in Houston, and he said I could just go ahead and file the n-400 anyway and they would extend my current PR card when I brought in a receipt of the n-400.

I would strongly suggest Certify AND you use the green Return Receipt card. That way you get a date stamp mailed back to you. About two weeks back there was a spate of questions asking how to track lost applications.

Several people have been waiting 60+ days, no checks cashed no information. Play it safe.

There were/are others too.

I agree.

Thanks for all advice. I mailed it on 7-21 certified mail and got the receipt 7-31. Pretty fast. Looking forward to putting all this behind me.
