N-400 - Part 10 - G(33) question

Hi,

In N-400 - Part 10 - G(33) - the question regarding SSS worded:
Are you a male who lived in the United States at any time between your 18th and 26th birthdays in any status except as a lawful nonimmigrant?

I think it is a multiple question? For example, I am a male who lived in US between 24 and 26, I will answer “YES”? Also, I was in F-1 and H-1B status between 24 and 26 (lawful non immigration status), should I answer “NO” (because I was in lawful nonimmigrant status).

Please advice. Thanks a lot!

Not true!

It is for ALL males except except for lawful nonimmigrants.

In other words ALL males that are lawful immigrants. Immigrants meaning Permant Residents and Citizens (incl Naturalized)... So why is it not true?

applyforcitizen,

If you were not a Perm Resident on your 27th birthday , dont bother abt Selective Service. Answer No, and thats it

If a person is in this country illegally, then he is technically not even an immigrant.. Also, why would an illegal register with the government ? And the registration form also requrires an SS #........

:D

JoeF, Long time no posts.... Nice to c u back in action!!

Yeah, it of course is against common sense. But the law is formulated this way. It is the way GeorgeF said: every male between 18 and 26 has to register. The law makes an explicit exception for males in lawful non-immigrant status. This implies that people in unlawful status are required to register. See http://www.sss.gov/must.htm

What if you didn't know of the illegal alien requirement so you didn't register for SSS?? What will happen at the interview? Is there any way out??

Ignorance of the law will never get you out of trouble. My guess is that since you are a PR they won' t take strict action against you if they find out abt your status before your GC. But pls spk with an attorney for sure. You DO NOT want to mess up your interview especially not in NY!

Thank You very much Rahul. Will talk to an attorney.
