N-400 interview in Oakland - N-14 question

Can anyone knowledgeable tell me what this would mean for the processing or am I just being too paranoid ?

Application filed in Nov 2001
PD Nov 2001
FP April 2002
Interview on Aug 26th 2002

During the interview, everything went well in terms of the test etc. but he seemed to want a copy of my I-140 (which I have since sent to them). All other processing like -- 'writing a sentence in english, civics questions, signature, etc. were cmopleted. But in the end he gives me this N-14 form which basically asks me to mail the I-140 to the Oakland office.

How long should I wait for the oath-ceremony letter ? I think the next ceremony in SF is tomorrow and the one after is on 22nd October.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is there any value in going over personally to the Oakland INS office and checking the status of my application/interview ?

Has anyone gone through this before ? N-14 issue ?

Also, has anyone been able to find out the status of their application by going over to the Oakland office (without an appointment) ??

Can someone respond to this please ?? Anyone ever heard of this or experienced this situation with N-14 (asking for more documents) and then how long does that take ?

Did the officer ask for the I-140 out of blue? or were there any questions related to how your green card was petitioned in the past. A couple of things are possible.

1. The INS might have lost/misplaced your I-140 in their file. They might be asking for your copy so that they can look at it. If this is the case, you probably don't need to worry; just a little bit of delay!

2. The officer might have been alarmed by your employment history (too many job changes, job change immediately after getting the green card, etc.). He/she may want to make sure that your I-140 petition was genuine and in good faith.

If I were you, I would just relax and wait until I hear from INS. Most probably everything is OK and just a little bit of sanity checking from INS.

Thanks zephyr.

The situation was -- I had an approved I-140 from company A. I quit that company and joined another company B who filed a fresh Labor, I-140 and I got my GC through company B.

But at the interview I found out that they only had the I-140 from company A and saw that I was working for company B when I got my GC (through my N-400 application -- work experience).

Thats when I said, I got my GC through company B and he asked me to provide a copy of an approved I-140 from company B (via the N-14 form). My question is -- I -140 is a document that an employer is supposed to have and not an individual. But I said -- I had a copy of it at home and the officer asked me to mail a copy of that document to the local office.

Is there any point in going there personally and trying to find out the status of my case ?

03pilot, judging from your response on what happened at your interview, you should be fine. Since they don't have a copy of your second I-140 from company B, they want a proof of that.

I don't think it is necessary or even possible for you to go back physically to the INS office and talk to them. Just sit tight and wait until you hear from them (most likely they will approve your case and send you a notice for oath).

Thanks again zephyr !

Just being impatient I guess since I was planning to travel out soon so wanted to get that out of the way.

All processing from here on out is at the local office -- right ? So I was wondering if one could just go there (I know they do not check if you have an appointment or not if you just land up there) and talk to the receptionist and have her/him check the status on the case. Is that too simplistic ?

Anyone else ever have been asked to provide additional documents via the N-14 form in the Oakland, CA INS office ? If so, then what is the general time-period from interview to oath-letter ?
