N-400 filing for my wife

Hello, firstly thank you for any advise anyone can give me.
Here is my situation.

My wife and I have been married since 2005. She has lived in the US and has had her green card since 2001. Because we were in no rush to do things we waited until last year to officially change her last name. She has a new social security card with her married name, and her driver's license shows it as well. My question is, does she have to change her name on her green card (form I-90 which has a filing fee of over $300, which to me seems like A LOT of money to simply change your name due to marriage) to her married name before she can file the N-400, or do I just put her married name as her current legal name, and use her maiden name where it asks for her name exactly as it appears on her green card? Her green card expires October of next year as well.

My thinking is why pay over $300 just to change her last name on her green card (I-90), if she is qualified to file an N-400. Thanks all!

You unnecessarily wasted money time effort last year. You could have changed her name by filing N-400. It is quite strange you did not file N-400 in 2007 when they raised the fee. I think there is no need to change her name in GC, but in N-400 mention all the earlier names used by her.

I actually did not pay for anything last year. I was asking if I needed to have her name changed on the green card before filing the N-400. Though I do agree that I should have filed the N-400 before the fee went so high. Thank you for answering though. I will go ahead and file the N-400 this year and not worry about changing anything on her green card. Thank you for the information!
