N-400 do we need to mention unemployed periods in employment history?

If there are periods of unemployment, mention it. Remember that concealing facts on N-400 application can result in denial.

One can mention it by NOT menting it. For example, if you say employeed by XXXX between 2005 and 2007, then by YYYY between 2009 and 2010, that is enough. Th eIO will know you were unemployed in 2008. I don't think there is need to explicitly mention you were unemployed
in 2009. There are many housewives who apply for citizenship. They simply can leave this part of N400 totally blank
 
I agree with WBH. Just write down your employment dates. Anything that is not employed should be assumed to be unemployed.

Leaving a gap in the employment doesn't automatically mean 'unemployed'. It could also mean - 'I choose not to disclose'. So, if you have gaps in your employment history, the IO is going to ask you whether you were unemployed for each of those gaps.

You might as well nip that question in the bud and put down 'unemployed' for the time when you were unemployed. (Similarly, no gaps in your residence history as well)

IOs are strange sometimes. I've been working for the same company for the last 6 years so I had only one Employer on my N400. The IO had me recite my previous periods of employment - month and year - going backwards. I got to 1995 before she asked me to stop - she was cross checking on her computer all that time - probably from my GC application.
 
The N-400 asks for periods of employment, not unemployment. List the periods of employment, and let the IO ask about the gaps if they want to.
 
When it comes to listing (or ommiting) an unemployment period - does it make a difference if I was just sitting at home not doing any work for a while or whether I formally registered for unemployment benefits in my State and collected unemployment?
 
You're not asked to list unemployment. List when you were employed.

For example
June 2006 - Oct. 2008 company X
May 2009 - Jan 2010 company Y
Feb 2010 - present company Z

The unemployment period is implied in the gap between Oct. 2008 and May 2009; there is no actual line for unemployment time.
 
Even if you were officially registered and collected unemployment pay and benefits (a fact which the interviewer can easilly check and find out..)?

They'll probably assume you collected unemployment benefits. Nothing wrong with that. All you're supposed to do is list your periods of employment. Don't list "date1 to date2, unemployed and collecting state benefits".

If they want to know about your source of financial support during a long period of unemployment, they'll ask.
