Hi folks,
I am planning to apply for my citizenship via the N-400 but have some issues in my history that I think will prevent me from getting citizenship so I wanted to ask the forum for advice.
For tax years 2016-2020, I did not file my taxes until 2023. As a result, the California tax board eventually put withholding order on my paycheck (essentially a 25% garnishment) in 2022 and 2023. I finally filed all my returns in 2023-2024 and am currently upto date with all my taxes both for the IRS and the California board. To be clear, I was not hoping to evade any taxes; my partner at the time had a substance abuse disorder and dealing with that plus some personal issues caused me to go into a deep depression that I only really recovered from in 2023.
Originally, I thought given that I did not owe any taxes I should be okay but upon looking at the N-400 instructions it asks you to attach documentation if you have ever had your wages garnished and any documentation saying that it has been cleared. I have both (the order and documents that show the current tax balance being $0) but I am worried that I will not pass the good moral character test.
Does anyone have any advice they can give me for my situation?
