N-400: Baltimore (VSC) time line

Hi:
I recently applied for the N-400 from Baltimore (Vermont Service Center). The following are my details:

Date N-400 Sent: October 20, 2003
Date N-400 received by VSC: October 21, 2003
Priority Date: October 21, 2003

Today (11/19/03) I received a "Notice of Action" form below which is mentioned "Fingerprint Notification". This form notified me of the fingerprinting date being 8:00am on 12/17/03, and the address of the location to take the fingerprints in Baltimore.

I have received the Fingerprint notification form. However, I have NOT received a receipt from VSC. My understanding is that the receipt document from VSC and the fingerprint notification are two separate and distinct documents. Is this not the case? Appreciate your advice.

Also, my last name on the Fingerprint notification form is mis-spelled. Is there any way I can rectify this when taking my fingerprints.

Deeply appreciate any inputs. Also, folks from Baltimore wishing to share timelines greatly appreciated.

Yes, they are 2 different documents. Normally, you don't need the application receipt as long as you have your application receipt#, which should be on your fingrprint notice. However, if you have to correspond with USCIS, its always a good idea to enclose a copy of the application receipt - in which case you might need it. As far as your spelling of last name is concerned, I doubt the people at fingerprinting office could be of any help. They are usually sub-contractors USCIS hires. The best solution would be to call the customer service number. Good luck!

If your name is spelt right on the Green Card and the N400 application you filed, then you should not have a delay associated... When u FP, they will enter both names (there is a seperate column for alias names)....

Please write to the VSC and also call the 800 number and tell them u dont have the receipt. Check ur case status online...

Your receipt will tell u if there is any evidence that is missing (required documentation) among other things like processing time

Thanks.

Phillydude and Rahul Kumar-appreciate your advice.

I received the receipt today. The name mis-spelling is the same on both documents (receipt and FP nofication).

Receipt also indicated about 180 days processing time.

2B1Citizen, you are a lucky man.. 180 days... Very sweet!

I have a similar name problem and the VSC/attorney advised me to

a) Write the VSC to inform them
b) If the INS has ur name wrong , then get a name change at the time of OATH (if u r at fault) or they will correct it themselves (if they are at fault)

Yes, I called the customer service 800 number concerning the name change, and the lady I spoke to informed me to write to VSC immediately and tell them there was an error in the name-and to submit copy of the passport and green card to back up the claim.

2B1Citizen,

What does your online status say ?

My PD is Oct 22. Have received the receipt last week (about 4 weeks after INS received my N400) but no FP notice yet.
My local office is Charleston,WV (VSC) (or is it Pittsburgh ? - I am not sure)

I was wondering if anyone has any updates on the Baltimore (VSC) timeline?

My updated info:
PD: 10/21/03
Received receipt: 11/18/03
FP: 12/17/03

Does anyone know, how long the interview will take place after fingerprinting? I am scheduled to be out of the country from 1/18/04 to 2/23/04. I am a bit worried that I may miss the interview notice and actual interview itself.

Thanks for the feedback.

I still have not received FP letter. Planning to leave for India on 12/17 for a month.

My online status says

Dsam, the good news is that they give you a three month window to take the fingerprints. In my FP notice, they set the FP date on 12/17/03 or any Wednesday subsequent to it before March 10, 2004.

So assuming you are going to India for 1-2 months-you should still be in good shape. After you return you can take your fingerprints.

The FP notices are sometimes delayed depending on your district office. You will probably receive the notice when you are away. I wouldn't worry about it-just enjoy the trip!!!

Help!
Does anyone have any idea of the approximate time gap between the fingerprinting date and the interview date for Baltimore?

My FP date is on 12/17/03 and I am scheduled to travel overseas on 1/18/04 for about five weeks. will I make it back in time for the interview?

Any feedback highly appreciated.

Hi 2B1Citizen,
Don't worry about it. 5 week is relatively very short period of time compared to 5/6 months who are waiting for the interview after being done with FP. So enjoy your vacation without being worried about missing your interview letter. USCIS has looooong way to go to process cases with such speed.

Rec`d FP appt letter on 12/6. Appt on 12/12.

(Minor discrepency with PD. Initial receipt and online status state PD as 10/22. But FP letter shows both rec`d date and PD as 10/20.)

So PD 10/20
FP 12/12. (May go for FP on 12/17 as I cannot make it on 12/12).

Baltimore/VSC Timeline update and a question

A quick update on my timeline for Baltimore (VSC):

Date N-400 Sent: October 20, 2003

Can some gurus advise on the approximate date when I can receive the intwerview letter?
Also, how much time is there between the interview letter receipt and the actual interview itself?

Hi 2B1Citizen

Me & my wife had the interview on May 20, 2003. It was very cool & the officers are very friendly. My wife's middle initial on the applaction did not match with the Birth certificate. The officer told they need to sent to court for name change which will take a week & she will receive within 5 to 6 weeks a letter when she can take the oath.
Our interview was at 9:40. Both of us arrived at 8:40. I was called by 9:00. The officer asked few questions and gave a paper with 10 question to read loud and anwere them. I answered 9 out of 10. She said I need to answer atleast 6 (60%). She asked to write "I know to write in english". She said I passed and if I want I can take the oath at 2:00 PM. The total time spent was less than 15 min. I said I can & went to take oath at 2:00. It took nearly 30 min. I received my Naturalization certificate and went to post office and applied for passport.

Details:
Priority date : Dec 21, 2002
Finger prints : Feb 12, 2003
Interview : May 20, 2003 9:00 AM
Oath : May 20, 2003 2:00 PM
INS center : Baltimore, MD

Good Luck

Traffic Violations & Tax Transcripts

Thanks, Puppalapati and Bulbul-dude.

I am scheduled to go for an interview April 15, and am anxious because of a huge back log of minor traffic violations incurred in the last 10 years. All these have been paid and were minor in nature, and received in different traffic jurisdictions in multiple states. However, it seems impossible to get court certified letters from each jurisdiction stating that the fines were paid. So I am in a bit of a fix.
Did the issue of traffic tickets come up at all in Baltimore for the interview. Based on legal advice, I answered No to all traffic violation questions (on the N-400 form) since these were not major or DUI related. However, it appears that there are differing views on this in this forum.

Also, it appears that IRS is providing 3 year tax transcripts instead of 5 years. Does the Tax issue come up at all in the interview stage particularly in Baltimore.

Any advice, tips and cautions, deeply appreciated particularly from those who interviewed at the BALTIMORE District office.

It is the reason that IRS will not give you tax returns for 2 more years to make it 5 because they are only allowed by law to give 3 years back.

ONLY and ONLY they will provide if you have a legal court order or any letter from the government agency authorised by LAW to request one from the payer or the IRS, going back 5 or more years.

I am not sure this is true. I called IRS and ordered using automated system, transcripts for 5 years. In fact, the system permits you to order upto 10 years free of cost. I called IRS at 800-829-1040.
