The SFO consulate moves fast! I'd sent in my Passport for cancellation on Tuesday by Express Mail, and got it back today (Thursday) by DHL. In case you're curious, I'd only sent the following:
1. A simple cover letter
2. My Indian Passport
3. A copy of the first page of my US Passport
4. A check for $15 to cover the cost of postage
My timeline thus far is:

Applied for Passport: 3/2/07, with expedited processing at King Country Courthouse, Redmond, WA
Check cashed: 3/9/07
Online status appeared: 3/9/07

Passport received: 3/12/07
Sent Indian Passport for cancellation: 3/13/07
