April 2003: Landed

Landed at Pearson International Airport on Saturday 5 April @ 9.15 a.m. Informed the customer/Immigration agent that I was landing. He asked me, if I had any goods-to-follow. I said yes, and he wrote GTF on my customs declaration form, and referred me to the immigration office.

In the immigration office, there were 2 officers on duty. I was the only person in line. The officer was a very friendly, young officer. She was very relaxed, and joking around with me. The whole process took 5-10 minutes. She verified the info on my landing paper, against my passport. Asked me, if I had to add any children to my LP. Asked me how much money I was bringing. Wrote the amount on my LP. Stamped "Not valid for Travel", on my LP. Gave me the usual info on SIN, OHIP. Had me sign a form for my PR card, and informed that it would be mailed in the next 4-6 weeks. She then took my picture for the PR Card. I was done by 9.25.

Then I proceeded next to the customs area, to get my GTF list stamp. This took longer. Almost 20 minutes. Nothing out off the ordinary there. It took a while to enter the info into the system etc.. that’s why the delay. I regretted declaring, that I had goods-to-follow...but I was out by 9.45.

I had landed !!! :D

Applied for my SIN. Visited friends and family while for a week.

Trip Back
Background:
H-1B – AOS stage

I handed our passports to the US immigration officer. The officer asked who were US citizens. I said, my kids were. He started chatting with my wife and I about his kids, while he processing our paper work. Issued me a new I-94, as I had a new H-1B approval notice with a new expiry date(June 2004). Asked me if I was a Canadian resident, I said yes. He asked me what the Canadian residency requirements were. I explained to him the 3/5 year rule. I think, he was just curious…nothing to do with my US immigration status. He pointed out the expiry date on my visa (Sept 2003), and informed that I can on re-enter the US, prior to that date. I asked, couldn’t I get it extended at St Louis, until the validity stated my H-1B approval (June 2004). He said yes. I was done.
US Customs was nothing out of the ordinary. The usual metal detectors, and baggage checks. Sailed through it in few minutes

Congratulations on becoming canadian PR.

thanks santana_rocks for sharing your landing experience with us.

I think landing by air is probably very easy and taking very less time.

sounds great santana.........

i will also plan by air..........since u are a PR now...........will u have to pay taxes on ur USA income ................

I assume u are wiating for ur US GC after which u will give upCanadian PR..................I also wanna do the same.

My biggest concern at this stage is that I dont wanna donate Taxes to Canadian Govt ..............on my US income after I land.

Pls throw some light on the same. ALso in the Goods to follow list what is the time limit in which u can send the goods.

In my case I dont plan to send anything coz I just wanna land and come back very next day ..........but i have heard people saying that u should include as much as u can in Goods to follow list.............

thanks in advance for ur reply
