My girlfriends Student visa got denied

SO my gf was a au pair for 2 years than got a tourist visa for 6 months.She applied for a student visa after her tourist visa which ran out nov 30th.She got a letter saying her Visa was denied because she has a 30 day window from the last day of her tourist visa nov 30th to start classes.Her classes were set to start january 6th so she missed it by 6 days and they denied it. The letter says you cant appeal it but can file a motion.The school never said anything about a 30 day period or obviously it would of sent different.If the sets a motion will she still technically be here illegal will the motion for appeal gets decided and it would ruin her chanced of returning any time soon, or would she be legal during the period of the appeal being decided? Any answers are so helpful. If she leaves now without any appeal what would be her chances of re applying for the student visa once she gets home, she found out she was denied 4 days ago, how long does she have to leave if she leaves within 14 days is it okay? Thanks all during this horrible time.I am a US citizen by the way.
