Dear David,

If you did not go to interview yet, you must get a lawyer. Most people who get denied do not have a lawyer. I understand the money 5000 is big, but find a free lawyer. Sometimes there are lawyers that can help you for free but you should search for them. In each state it is different. What state do you live?

Since English is your second language, you need a good translator too. If your English is not so good (like many of us here), asylum officer will not understand you well and it may influence your case. Try hard. If you don't try for yourself, nobody will.

I'm living in the state of texas. I'll tell you we went to Catholic charities and they said they could not help because they do not have the resources necessary for our case. if not have a good English but I'll take a translator to the interview

Catholic charities may have helped us without cost but they could not help us..... the instructions on how to complete Form I-589 says you do not need a lawyer to interview. there says he is not allowed a lawyer in the interview more than just the translator

You are right, it is not required to have a lawyer, but it is helpful to have a lawyer because lawyers understand the law.

Here I googled a list of law firms in your area that provide free services for asylum seekers. Simply see the link and press "CTRL" and then "F" then type the word asylum. It will give you all law firms' addresses and phone numbers. Hope it helps.

I'll think. Catholic Charities also gave us a list of associations and lawyers that provide help nonprofit and all were charged even cheaper, but I'll think about it.
