I understand that in order to acquire residency through marriage, there must be a demonstration of financial ability to support the immigrating spouse. Must his/her American spouse demonstrate such ability, or can the immigrating spouse obtain another sponsor?

The American spouse has to sign an Affidavit of Support (I-864), regardless of whether their income alone is sufficient or not. If their income+assets are insufficient, they can find another US citizen or permanent resident to jointly sponsor with another I-864 (or I-864A if they qualify as a "household member").

From an co-sponsor main sponsor should be able to get consent and also copies of co-sponsor's tax papers for the last FY and previous two years also for additional proof if possible. In terms of tax returns, you are only required to submit a photocopy or an Internal Revenue Service-issued transcript of a photocopy or an Internal Revenue Service-issued transcript of co-sponsor's complete Federal income tax return for your most recent tax year, or an explanation if it is not submitted.
