Multiple Visa voids earlier one ?

My dad has a 10 year visitor visa. He then got a J1 visa to teach in a school in the US for a year, after which he has returned to India.

Is his visitor visa void or still valid ?

As per my understanding,

you can have multiple visa stamps in the passport but only one visa status at a time,

So unless the conusulate cancelled the B1 visa stamp when J1 was issued it is still valid.

The only other thing to note is " was there any home country residency rule attached with his J1"

if that is true he might have to wait that long.
