Guys,
Please help out -
I got my CP done successfully last month; and am still in India. I am coming to US day after tomorrow... However, I am doing a project for my company in India, so I am going to US just to get my passport stamped; and then will need to come back in a week.
Do you guys know if this is allowed?
Will they question me as to why was I in US only for a week?
Once they stamp the passport at the airport, am I free to travel outside the country immediately?
Do I need to carry anything special when I enter now?

Please let me know this asap, since I need to make my plans for leaving this weeekend

Thanks
-Please let me know ...

Nothing special after 551 stamp

You do not need to get any clearance.. it is your Permamnet resident visa

memygc, not sure if you\'re looking for opinions from the same people

who gave them earlier, but for what it is worth, here goes

Do you guys know if this is allowed?
Yes. It is allowed. You can travel outside US and return without need for any more visas.

Will they question me as to why was I in US only for a week?
No. There is no restrictions on travel, unless the period outside exceeds 6 months, in which case there are some formalities.

Once they stamp the passport at the airport, am I free to travel outside the country immediately?
Yes

Do I need to carry anything special when I enter now?
First time, nothing special. Once you go out after stamping, if your return is later than 6 months, apply to the INS for a Re-entry permit. Also carry letters from your company stating you had been working on a project outside US for the said period as part of your job responsibilities.

Travelling with 551 stamp and no plastic cards

From Shiela Murhty\'s Bulletin

---------------------------------------------------------
Permanent Residents

One item of particular interest is that permanent residents who are
traveling on the I-551 stamp (temporary evidence of green card given
before
the plastic card is issued) will be automatically subjected to
secondary
inspection. They will not be quickly processed through the line. This
is a
significant departure from the prior practice of many years when
individuals
could travel on the stamp in the same manner as persons with the
plastic
card. The stamp is the "functional equivalent" of the plastic card and
is
valid evidence of permanent residence. It is a valid reentry document,
in
combination with a valid passport. Presumably, the secondary inspection
would provide the POE officers with additional time to determine
whether the
stamp is legitimate or a forgery.

As a bit of good news, permanent residents who have with them the
actual
"plastic" I-551 card or green card can use the U.S. citizen line at
Dulles
and JFK airports in Virginia and New York, respectively. This is
apparently
also the case at a few other POEs, although it is not mentioned
anywhere in
writing on the boards.
